Alright, so after a lot of virginia and VaPer and VaBur in this summer I really missed some good latakia so I decided to open this tin of Cornell & Diehls Pirate Kake. I love Latakia and this did not disappoint! All the reviews are very complete, so I will just add my few points. ok, campfire and dead trees works for me, too. If you're noty crazy about Lat Boimbs run. I find it to have a very rich, flavorfuly smokey, pleasantly toasty, note. We got ourselves reacquainted. It is delicious. But like so many C&D blends I've tried, it's trying too hard. A treasure you need to have in your cellar! Black mostly in color with some remnants of what brown tobacco was there. It's quite easy to peel off the cake layer and get it ready for smokable condition. The character turning more dark and spicy in the second half so a sweet drink (coffee, tea) goes great with it. So now only in the strongest blends am I able to sense, smell (and for some, taste). It comes in a crumble cake and like all the C&D cakes I've tried this one is easily breakable and crumbled nicely. A smooth, robust blend with LOTS of exceptional Latakia accompanied by Turkish and cavendish cut Burley. There's something about the experience that's like drinking neat tea. A gold-hearted thug of a blend. The small amount of Turkish and Burley stands up evenly to the seventy five percent of Latakia. Comparable to an Is lay Whiskey in smokiness, though if one is looking for notes of peat I recommend C&D's 'Strathspey'. This is the most delicious of all the latakia. And that was only through the nose. Pirate Kake has a steady latakia impact throughout the bowl and burns down to a fine gray ash - no dottle and very little moisture if smoked slowly. I always load my pipe the night before and let it sit overnight. I like Latakia, but this blend gives Latakia a bad name. I am a huge English fan and I have smoked most of the unicorns. A Latakia lovers stand by for me. I like to rub this one out to be a fine ribbon cut consistency. If you like Latakia, try this anyway as it is exceptionally wondeful example of the fact that a predominantly Latakia blend can be heavenly. To me, the tin note is mostly smoke and leather, with some wood and maybe a wee bit of fruitiness. Pirate?s Kake is a tease that ultimately leaves one unsatisfied. LET THEM SMOKE KAKE. I always have some with me. This is not an all day smoke. I have no idea what the room note is because I smoke on the porch but I imagine it would be very potent. As others have mentioned, Pirate Kake would probably blend very well with FVF, or other sweet, full bodied, predominately English or Virginia blends. I'd say it's complex, but not like Penzance or a GL Pease latakia. Smooth smoke from start to finish! I cant seem to tolerate the nicotine rush associated with the more fuller bodied tobaccos. While you are sitting there enjoying the bowl you can watch the smoke accumulate in the room and settle to the floor. So ill be blending the reat of this kake w either the comoys or LNF as the blend was so good i was thinking about my next bowl before i was even halfway done w the first. I do read some reviews that the burley is undetectable, and used as a filler, however this is not the case for me. This is one of the very best tobacco I have ever smoked. I love the smokiness and find it wonderful from top to bowl bottom. Because of the high concentration of lat, this blend is very smooth and leathery with campfire notes galore. Most other cuts wouldn't work with this much Latakia. I Highly recommend this blend to all latakia lovers! PK made the top 5 list. Also a great mixer- See my C&D review of Jamaican Rum. Rusticated smooth top dublin. This is an exceptional tobacco. I find the first 1/3 of the bowl a bit harsh and smokey, but then it settles down into a rich creamy smoke that is on par with Penzance in my book. A cigarette is to be smoked. The only downside I've found to this blend is the mouth-drying effect it has. In my opinion, Pirate Kake is missing the added character, or that little bit of something extra that's needed to elevate it to the status of other top-shelf blends in its class. I After smoking pipes for many years; quitting; coming back, went looking for a latakia rich tobacco. I enjoyed the tobacco for what it's worth, but felt completely satiated for a while. Anyway, I've been happy as a clam with this one and can't recommend it enough to English lovers. As far as C&D's products go, Greg Pease's Quiet Nights recipe has more of that creosote/Latakia flavor up-front. This is a smooth, robust tobacco, with awesome smokey , and nutty, and woody tastes. I received a free sample of this with an online order, and it quickly became my favorite. Leaves more than average moisture and requires a few relights and smokes at a less than medium burn rate. This blend always takes me to the fall season in Michigan, no matter what time of year. Stay tuned for the results. I never really get a nic buzz from this. PK: Highly recommended.
