So Herbie got his tape, and he played it for us, and he goes, This is your new singer. _[laughs] _And were all looking at each other going, Really. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. I think anything beyond a 5 or 6-minute solo is a waste of time. But I went. When you have one or the other, its just not enough. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. And its what I really love. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. I said, . Right? So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. AD: No, but Ludwig wants me to start doing clinics. I use traditional grip when I'm playing anything other than rock and roll, because rock and roll doesn't call for a lot of notes. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. RM: Where did you learn traditional grip? I like doing that sort of thing because I've got the technique to play it. AD: No. I was the one who really wanted to do it. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. Originally I was only going to play on half the record, and they were going to do the other half with another studio musician. It was like getting over some kind of love affair, you know. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. And so they gave us an ultimatumyou either get a frontman, or were gonna drop you from the label. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. AD: I am. They all worked in the daytime and they'd come together at night to play jazz. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing.
