Every Thursday night I yell Black Alert to let everyone know Im watching Star Trek. Anyway it was just a thought. Its all pretty subjective. Basically a good officer whos been in Starfleet for some years but her career stalled due to emotional and self-esteem issues. Youve got to hand it to Harry Kim. I guess making Tilly first officer isnt anywhere close to ridiculous as making KT Kirk a Captain who was still a cadet and had probably spent 2 weeks in space before he got the jobbut its pretty damn close. Some folks here like this nu trek because it lowered standards to make them feel better about themselves. I think the character would have been much better served if Tillys quirks were something that changed as the character grew over the seasons. It was EXACTLY what I needed while mourning my own mother. Weight gain from thyroid issues, anti depressants, steroids, is a fairly small percent of the population. DSC had many issues at the beginning. So I think Tilly definitely goes to employ those skills. That said, I know people can be cruel and I am even worried bringing up this topic for fear of the idiot fringe piling on, but I hope Mary Wiseman is okay or has a good reason for her weight gain since S1. She never wouldve made it through the Academy. Like maybe he would be way too codependent or something? I wasnt complaining there were therapists on board. Im not the idiot fringe but her weight is none of our business (and, also, she had a baby before S3, I believe). I do find their quirks annoying at times, but the most important reason I like them is because theyre honest, kind people with a good heart. Bad writing, illogical story arcs, unbalanced tempo, underdeveloped characters or sudden jumps in character development. | December 23, 2020 | And I belong., After reading the Forbes article, Wiseman got some backup from someone who knows what its like to be a woman in the captains chair: Kate Mulgrew, who thinks Mary is killing it on Discovery and should pay the haters no mind., I saw the @Forbes article on Mary Wiseman @may_wise clearly killing it onscreen & off in #StarTrekDiscovery. Great interview, Dawn. It feels the only reason was to have a non-binary character, which after a few episodes ended up fading into the background with the rest of the furniture anyway. No, from Starfleets POV its 3 years. No probably not. Try the Daily Mail for 5 minutes. There is such a difference between having criticisms of the way the characters are written and criticizing the actors performance/craft and their leadership in the company. Then that very well could be something for not just women but everyone to aspire towards. Personally I dont find that inspiring in any way whatsoever. Tilly is justannoying. Many smoke to keep the weight off. What accent? Sigh all you like, but thats not going to magically make physics and biology work differently. We need to examine our highest ideals and allegiances to reveal our preconceived notions, shallow knee-jerk reactions, and find the truth about our choices. Its very possible Mary Wiseman wanted off the show, or needed a bit of a break. This show has been for a niche of Trek fandom not the mainstream. I let go of my preconceptions about what star trek is. The Klingon redesign was much more than a visual reboot and especially the tech aspects dont fit canon (holographic communication, Klingon cloaking, android bridge crew, easy terraforming, state-of-the-art nanotech, Enterprise battle squad). I like me. I truly do love this show, but Burnham and Tilly are so damn annoying. I dont love her the way I love Saru or Pike, or Janeway or Seven or Picard or Spock. As a Black girl, I felt I was supposed to look this way. In fact now I think of it, Book aside everyone has an American accent. I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. A person who we see strive to make themselves a better person. At New York Comic Con, TrekMovie participated in some group interviews with members of the cast and crew,. It would make sense if you knew the story ;) Lets just say Jake did write his famous book a couple of years after the end of DS9, but in the years and decades ahead he went on to much bigger things and took his career and his life in a very different direction. She is super meta. Not sure what her weight has to do with anything. And now, with only three years under her belt in the field, From future Starfleets POV, thats 900 years! Although there are speculations of Mary Wiseman's pregnancy, she is not. But I think one of the things that leaves everyone feeling unmoored in this situation is they dont even know how to use their skills to deal with this because its something theyve never seen before, and they cant predict it, they dont know by which rules its operating, and how to even engage. Yes but Star Trek shouldnt be about lazy writing, poor character development and bad storytelling. I LOVE the future! This week's episode raised concerns. I think people need that kind of thing to heal. From what Ive read, having her on the bridge because of her betazed abilities was what Roddenberry had in mind. Shes beyond perfect with her line delivery. But the show almost seems to go out of its way every season for some of the dumbest story points you can think of. I would ask our family doctor, Is there anything you can give me thatll make me gain weight?'. The fourth episode of the new season of Star Trek: Discovery ("All is Possible") arrived this morning and it has fans buzzing about Lt. Sylvia Tilly. And over the last couple of years, so have I. Im still not fond of the gory, violent Klingon business of the first couple of seasons, but I slowly began to see DISCO anew. Not everyone is going to agree with you in life but to accuse others of sullying the memories of people they didnt know existed until you replied to their posts may provoke far more negative responses. Harry wasnt annoying watching him was just sad :-D. Im glad for you that you didnt find him annoying. The U.S.S. But dont those characteristics fit better on a younger character, while the older one grows up and changes? Mary Wiseman as Tilly in episode 402, Anomaly. I would expect more from the Star Trek crowd, which is usually quite enlightened. You always come up with weird posts VS this one is weirder than usual Im afraid to say. You misunderstood. I think the ship can handle a little chonk. For me, DS9 was the best Star Trek Show for character development. It is also available on Netflix in 190 countries around the world. So I think we pick up with her after some time has passed since the events of that season, but shes still sort of not really sure what to make of it, and everything that used to be really comfortable isnt sitting as comfortably as it used to if that makes sense. Thank you, Trek Movie Staff, for sharing my interview with your readers and providing a link to Forbes.com! That could explain the weight gain. Two Kelpians and a Disco Kenny (Zero Kelpians were harmed during this shoot. Seasons one through three are available to stream now on CBS All Access. Not Mary Wisemans fault; the writers fault. The problem is, very deep into his 80s, and theres still chatter about him playing the action hero. Tilly looks great and her weight is a not a issue. If you cant deal with the idea of conflicting opinions then I really dont think you should be online at the moment. The very basis of Star Trek is in direct conflict with people like that. Right!? There is also the issue that a crew needing constant therapy sessions while regularly saving the galaxy is not an easy narrative trick to pull off. Only showing up for briefings when that specialty was needed for that particular situation. However, if we got to see Tilly gradually improve herself. I never felt that what has come before should define the franchise in the future. You mean that I can find myself a BBW in the 32nd Century? I'm finding Star Trek Discovery to be incredibly dull and childish. I always have to correct it, so its not terribly efficient. American actress Mary Wiseman was born on July 30, 1985. This is why Discovery is polarising and this is why people four seasons in still dislike Burnham and Tilly as characters. Age is affecting my memory haha. Good for Mary! This was to reveal the true intents and emotions of the players in each plot, which highlights the role they play in momentous choices in high-stake situations. But the characters are pitch perfect. Heaven forefend women feel good about themselves! It makes sense there would be and that they be a part of the medical team. And if people are critical of her because her appearance does not meet their expectations, they dont really have a clue of what Star Trek is all about. My condolences to you, for your mum. Star Trek: Discovery currently streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. By: TrekMovie.com Staff So sayeth Scotty, the contrarian. If that scene reflects something she regularly incorporates into her real-life, then I think she will be just fine and she can tell the haters to go pound salt. Therefore, I love her. Thats not a leader. That sort of thing contributes to some pretty hardcore dysmorphia sure, they are famous and have luxuries and money so many of us dont, but hearing stories like how Carrie Fisher was told she should lose weight to be able to reprise Leia, or how Kumail Nanjani is scarily fixated on his physical appearance now is sad. It is not others right to tell someone how their body should be that sort of thing was done with slaves. Han Van Sciver and Mary Wiseman in At the Wedding (Photo: Marc J. Franklin), Watch Wiseman and cast and crew talk about the season four finale. 71 comments so far. As for the debate about sending the message being overweight is good: the heart of the issue is that everybodys body is their own, not health and physical fitness. Perhaps season four will address Burnham and Tillys unreadiness on more than an emotional level. Respectfully, to anyone somehow offended by that. And yeah the Full Circle stories do sound a bit depressing especially since SPOILER ALERT they kill off Janeway in them! each series has traditionally had someone that acts as a way to explore the inner humanityie spock, data, odo, doc/seven. Andrew: Great, perceptive, thoughtful post! Of course my original statement still stands regarding Tilly becoming Sarus Number One. Its one thing thats definitely been improved upon by the more recent stuff. There is a wealth of other outlets for health and fitness information, that frankly are more dispassionate and factual than getting health and fitness info from celebrities. And I felt that was ridiculous. The Relaunch Litverse books for DS9 are uneven in my reading experience as compared to the TNG and the Voyager books once Beyer took over. Thats kind of what I was playing with. I notice that for whatever reason certain words will trigger the language to switch to French on my phone, and then I have to go back and correct everything. Btw have you come across any good DS9 books about what happened to Sisko or the rest of the crew after the finale? Jerks. She isnt back on Discovery. Even though she's still in the final season of Starfleet Aacademy studies She was assigned to the USS Discovery to get some practical experience. I think you are talking jibberish. And Kirsten Beyer probably consults on that show too along with her duties on Picard and Discovery, so its possible at least. It just came to me and wanted your opinion. Tillys great contribution is that shes NOT that sort of superwoman most people can never be. Make better choices. I have considered it and rejected it. While Im excited to get back to the 32nd century and see whats changed since season 3 Im still not excited for the season itself. MS Wiseman owns the sadistic Bitch Capt Killy like she does Tilly. ..I have a total girl crush. Just take a little trip down the hellhole that is a tabloids message boards and youll see the kind of body shaming of male and female actors and celebrities that exists out there. Because Book is someone who doesnt just have cerebral, intellectual intelligence. IMHO, if she usually eats well, trains and commits to staying healthy, then life can be a lot of fun leading an active adventurous life while still enjoying food and fine dining and it is irrelevant what people say about her looks. They have solved some of these issues the easy way by talking themselves out of it (Klingon hair, holograms, Ariam being no android at all), now that we are in the future none of it really matters anymore. That one ship generates more energy than present-day Earths entire human energy expenditure, generates its own artificial gravity, and violates causality routinely. Her character of Cadet Tilly in Star Trek Discovery is warm and positive. With predictive spelling and multiple languages available, incorrect word choice is a constant threat even when one does type in the correct word. And, in that sense, it is okay to be used as it was above. Have to disagree. I see those things and they hurt me because Im a person. Yes, I like both Barclay and Tilly. Why is that a command level position? As long as the stories remain laser-focused on the *people* their *relationships* and the *emotions* generated therein, instead of ships, gadgets, and effects, well be fine. I even got a t-shirt that says DISCO on it, which prompts inquiries about my musical tastes of past decades when I was a twenty-something, lol. A statistical average does not justify shaming or ridiculing anyone. David Ajala: I would be very dangerous. Maybe having had to step up to the plate before she was ready I think she intellectually knows that she didnt fail, and that its not her fault that Osyraa took the ship, she didnt have all the information, but I still think the fact that that she took command and somehow lost the ship would be an enormous blow to her confidence and make her question a lot of stuff. As long as Wesley Crusher exists she will always be in a race for that title. While Tilly had big dreams in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, she struggled with feelings of inadequacy and was hindered by a social awkwardness that often left her feeling like an outsider. Fitness may be in the eye of the beholder, as hes commented himself that contempories his age have to hit the head just a bit more often. Sylvia Tilly was an ambitious female Human Starfleet officer who lived during the mid- 23rd century. I like her personality though, mostly. It doesnt matter either way but with so much Voyager mythology created in those novels, it would be cool to see some of it translated on this show! This is a part of the reason people cant take to them, alongside their poorly written characters. And doesnt that just make the point about the difference between fitness and apparent chunkiness or curveyness. I found him quite annoying, myself. It doesnt look like unhealthy curvy but just different type of genes. Thematic darkness is fine but graphic visuals arent. What was your point to this comment, anyway, except to minimize and dismiss support for plus-size women? 89. all the outfits here are golden IMO but those shoes murder! It really doesnt fit in the century they are in. And it all happened OFF SCREEN! Marys my TV crush for the last 3 years. I hope were able to explore it because theres potential for great levity, but then also really important conversations to be had because when you care about someone you dont want to see them go through pain, and I can see completely how Tilly will be very protective of Michael Burnham. Its could have (or couldve). During the 1st season, Michael helped Tilly to gain confidence and then continued to nurture that confidence through . They basically wrote her off the show! Neither she nor anyone else with common sense is celebrating obesity. Ive learned a lot of bad spelling comes from dictating into your smartphone. It explains why each scene is half-redundant and half-contradictory with the others within the same episode. Mary shouldnt listen to the haters and Sonequa, I never noticed she looked any different than she did before, body wise. Or are you only a troll if you criticize something about Discovery? You are correct, it comes down to the same thing, poor plot development. In CanadaDiscoveryis broadcast on CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave. Where is this? Come on she looks great. Thats just a matter of preference. It makes it quite American centric. I just dont remember if it was something I read years ago or if it was in an interview with Gene. Nah Book is Boba Fett and I want to see the spin-off series THE BOOK OF BOOK :-). The episode, titled "All Is Possible,". Absolutely. Gee, so some Trek fans can be @$$holes. His Voyager appearances were also horrid. Thats a crumpet I want to butter. [laughter], David Ajala as Book and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael in episode 401 Kobayashi Maru. Most of what she did was convey the amazingly obvious like offering such useful insights such as, Hes concealing something but I dont know what. And her abilities were never fully defined. I realized that unless I wanted to deal with health issues like hypertension, diabetes and other medical ailments, I would have to eat less and less as I got older and older. It is constantly exposing the never ending struggle of smart and talented woman of color. And CBS posted some images of Emperor Georgious quarters on the ISS Discovery. She could of made it what we call General American/mid-Atlantic to neutralize it a little. #StarTrekDiscovery #MirrorLandry pic.twitter.com/Ed0nbToiQH, Rekha the leaves (@TheRekhaSharma) December 19, 2020. Jury still out on Books character.definitely ahead of the 2 dimensional bridge crew though. Not with DSC, not with ANYTHING. Saying that its the job of actors to tell people whats healthy and whats not is the problem, not a solution. The doctor was usually the therapist. Should the nice girl get off your lawn? Mary Wiseman (born July 30, 1985) is an American actress. I would imagine those who liked Barclay probably include a large portion of those who like Tilly. You are always very insightful. should take a pear of pruning shears and cut off that little pecker of yours (its what Killy would do).
